It started with a love of basketball shoes in high school. Turner Seline, 25, of St. Louis became enamored of colorful kicks in bright hues of orange, turquoise, yellows and blues. He matched them with T-shirts when he hit the courts. And at first it was kind of practical.

He wore sneakers a lot on and off the court, so he wanted them to last. He reasoned that if he owned more than a few pairs, he could rotate them and prolong wearing them without wearing them out.

But he soon realized that the shoes made him happy. He couldn’t explain it, but he wanted more colors, more variety, more shoes.

About six years ago, he went to work at Journeys shoe store, and his love of shoes quickly became an obsession. Candy-colored sneakers from Asics, Saucony and Reebok and special edition Kermit the Frog Adidas or Monopoly-edition basketball shoes line the walls of what used to be his roommate’s room.

The bedroom is now a shoe closet. If he has guests, he says that they can sleep on the couch. Then he reconsiders and says that he’d offer to give up his bed and sleep among his shoes.

“I’d love to be surrounded by shoes,” Seline said.

There are 217 pairs of shoes (all size 12) ranging from Kool-Aid sneakers in orange with a turquoise blue sole to $800 dress shoes from luxe footwear designers such as Salvatore Ferragamo in his shoe closet.

He says that his favorite brand of shoes are Pumas for play and Magnanni (a brand known for handcrafted leather construction) for work and sophistication. He tries to wear as many as he can regularly, but there are a few special-edition sneakers that are just for his private display.

“I just get this feeling when I see a shoe that I’ve just got to have, and I just know it,” Seline said. That feeling happens a lot, but it helps that he now works in Nordstrom’s men’s shoes department as an assistant manager, and “they treat us (employees) all right with the prices.”

Still, when asked to estimate the price of his collection in total, he scans his shoe room stacked with shoes on three walls just over waist-high and confesses: “I don’t know that I’d ever want to know how much I have invested in these shoes.”

Seline displays his shoes with a clever merchandising display that is categorized by style but offers a mix of colors and brands. Some shoes point north, others east or west, peeking out from boxes stacked like building blocks or the cubby holes he created from shelving at the hardware store.

There are Viva Las Vegas-style studded dress, blue metallic slip-ons, no-so-standard black lace-ups and classic cognac-colored tassled loafers on one side of the room, and the other is lined with a Skittles-rainbow of athleisure kicks. He even has a pair of wooden shoes from a trip to Holland tucked into his collection.

Seline said that his parents have decided that he has enough shoes, so they no longer support his habit, but luckily, his girlfriend, brother and sister know the quickest way to warm his heart.

“A new pair of shoes will always make me happy,” Seline said.

And he is reluctant to admit it, but he knows that many guys will only buy shoes based on comfort, but he’s been known to suffer for his addiction.

“I have a pair of Dolce and Gabbana loafers that just don’t rub my foot the right way, but it doesn’t matter, they are really cool,” he said of the black European-toed shoes with an eye-catching design of raised stitching around the toe and heel that he occasionally wears to work even though he knows he’ll regret the pains of wearing them.

As you would expect, Seline loves what he does and gets a natural high whenever a new shipment of shoes arrives. It also gives him something to talk to customers about. By the time he brings out five or so pairs of shoes to try on, he’s told them, “I own this one” at least three times, and it naturally strikes up some interest in his collection.

“It also gives me some credibility. If you can’t trust a guy’s opinion with this many shoes, then something’s wrong,” Seline said.

And just in case you’re wondering, “The Guinness Book of World Records” doesn’t keep track of the largest shoe collection.

Former Filipino first lady Imelda Marcos reportedly left behind 2,700 pairs of shoes when her family fled to Hawaii during the People Power Revolution in 1986. And these days, Darlene Flynn in California reportedly has the biggest shoe-related collection in the world and was profiled by Ripley’s “Believe It or Not.”

She claims to now own more than 11,000 shoe-related items, including a replica of the Disney Cinderella glass slipper, leather moccasins, cast-iron boots, a red-stiletto shoe phone, a shoe made of money (exactly $15.07) designed by her son and even a shoe made from the ash collected at Mount St. Helens’ eruption. But she has said that only 100 or so pairs of them are wearable.

Healthy feet are happy feet. Can non leather shoes help keep your feet healthy? Is a vegan shoe what you need for healthy feet? Let’s look at a couple foot conditions, the causes and recommended prevention tips before we decide.

Athlete’s foot, I’m sure you have heard it. I hope you have never had to deal with it. It is a fungal infection that usually occurs between the toes. Most often contracted in showers, gyms, dressing rooms, swimming pool locker rooms, and other warm damp areas. Good foot hygiene is important, daily washing with soap and water followed by thorough drying. Wear dry airy shoes and socks help keep the feet dry. When using public showers and pool areas user protective footwear, a good shower show or flip-flop. Dry airy shoes and flip-flops, sounds like non leather shoes to me.

Toenail Fungus. You pick this up pretty much the same way you do athlete’s foot. About ½ of us will get it by age 70. It is more difficult to treat, so prevention is the key. Prevention is similar as well with the added recommendation of not wearing nail polish on the toes.

Protective shoes such as sandals and shower shoes when you are in public pool areas and public showers and locker rooms. Wearing dry airy shoes and socks is recommended. These are all types of non leather shoes and vegan sneakers. The sandals and flip-flops are more about protection from picking up the fungus. Dry airy shoes and socks is about keeping your feet dry and letting them breathe. Letting your feet breathe and stay dry is not something leather does well. Nice casual non leather shoes are what you want.

We use to call them sneakers or boat shoes back in the day. Now it’s, vegan shoe and vegan sneakers. I can tell you one thing for sure, the choices in non leather shoes today are far, far better than back in the old sneaker and boat shoe days when Keds were about the only choice. Technology is wonderful.

The Detroit Pistons have made a lot of new fans tonight. Rip Hamilton helped needy kids around the area get a free pair of sneakers. He was joined by teammates earlier tonight at Detroit’s Boll Family YMCA. The Pistons teamed-up with Samaritan’s Feet as they donated 1,000 pairs
of sneakers and socks to the kids.

“This is such a blessing considering the economy and everything right now. This really helps out because everyone is in a crunch, it’s tough, and I’m really blessed because I was able to bring down six kids, and they all got shoes. That’s really great.”

This event is part of the NBA Cares “Week of Service.” Every NBA team gives a day of service to its community. “Samaritan’s Feet” is a humanitarian relief organization that puts shoes on the feet of children all around the world. The goal of members is to provide 10 million pairs of shoes to 10 million impoverished people in 10 years.

Like many working women, Libby Edelman, co-founder of the Libby Edelman and Sam Edelman shoe lines, spends much of her day racing around and needs footwear that is comfortable as well as stylish.

To make things easier on her feet, Ms. Edelman, who has about 50 pairs of shoes, often seeks out work shoes with heels that are two to three inches high and are a little chunkier than stilettos. “You feel very safe wearing them,” says Ms. Edelman. She also likes shoes with a small platform at the base of the ball of the foot. This adds height while leaving a gentler slope between the heel and the ball of the foot.

Ms. Edelman typically avoids shopping for shoes at the end of the day or when the weather is hot. “Your feet are more swollen then,” she explains. She brings along socks or the kinds of hose she’s likely to use with her new purchase.

When she’s in a shoe store, she confesses, “I’m first attracted to style.” This fall, she likes both crisp equestrian and slouchy bohemian-style boots, plaid-patterned flats and shoes that she describes as “jewelry for the feet” with charms or big crystals.

Before Ms. Edelman makes a purchase, the shoes have to pass some tests. When trying them on, she walks on different surfaces—both carpeting and marble, for example. “When you’re walking on a harder surface, you’ll realize what kind of padding is in the shoe.” Of course, “if it digs into any part of my foot at all, I’ll immediately take it off,” she says, noting that she also passes on shoes if her toes touch their ends.

When buying boots, she sometimes asks the store clerk to apply a winterizing spray to them. (Or she does it when she gets home.) Another tip to preserve boots: If they get very damp, she crumples up newspaper and stuffs it into the boots when she gets home. “It’ll help dry it out and also keep the shape of your foot,” she says.

Bo knows he needs to step up for the Jets.

No one in the Jets’ locker room is quite sure how he got the nickname, but Sione Pouha is simply called “Bo.” With the season-ending injury to Kris Jenkins, Pouha has been thrust into the starting defensive tackle position. Whether it’s Bo or Sione, Rex Ryan just hopes some form of Pouha’s name is called early and often Sunday against Oakland.

Pouha, now in his fifth season, is a career reserve who has started just one NFL game. At 6-foot-3 and 325 pounds, he is smaller than the 360-pound Jenkins but will be called upon to clog the middle.

“Sione stepped in and did a great job,” said safety Jim Leonhard of Pouha’s play in the 16-13 overtime loss to the Bills. “You lose a player like Kris and it’s tough, but Sione stepped in so we wouldn’t miss a beat.”

Jenkins was the heart and soul of the Jets’ defense and was instrumental in Gang Green’s No. 7 rush defense a year ago. They have slipped to No. 21 this season, so Pouha won’t only have to replace Jenkins, but improve upon his production.

“I’d feel like I was cheating Jets if I didn’t bring my best every day,” said Pouha, who will see time at tackle along with Howard Green and Mike DeVito. “To me, you prepare the same way, even if you don’t start. It’s my job to be ready.”

Jenkins’ knee injury comes at a bad time for the Jets, who have lost three straight games. In the second quarter of last Sunday’s game, Jenkins’ collapsed in a heap after injuring his knee, saying that he heard something “pop.” The injury was eventually diagnosed as a torn ACL.

“I just need to step up. I can’t replace Kris,” Pouha said. “All I can do is be me.”

Shoes. I’ve been thinking about shoes. Such potential for fetishizing, and you know how I love a good object of fetish (oh please, won’t I ever shut up about my fetishes?)

I wrote many months ago about my favorite clothes through the years. I thought I’d add an endnote to that post, about the shoes that have held special meaning for me.

Here are the ten seminal pairs of shoes from my personal Shoe Canon:

1. The orthopedic shoes of my childhood. I got to choose every year until I was seven or eight from the three colors available: navy, burgundy, and brown. Simply dreadful. Why orthopedic shoes? I was quite pigeon-toed. And guess what! I still am. I like to think of it as a delightful quirk.

2. My aunt’s black suede grommeted platform shoes. She had tiny feet, so I could play dress-up in them without falling over. I think the contrast between my clunky orthopedics and these marvels of glamor made me think that life, or at least shoes, would not always be so drab and defeating…

3. Patent leather tap shoes with wide grosgrain ribbon ties. I adored my tap instructor, George. He was about a million years old and had been in vaudeville, and could still tap the hell out of a floor.

4. Ballet slippers. I remember the excitement of sewing the little pieces of elastic across the instep.

5. Black Capezio character shoes, my first heels. Same now as they were in 1983. Let’s be honest, they really don’t look all that thrilling, do they? It’s hard to imagine what I saw in them, but back then the faux leather and ingenue heel screamed possibility.

6. Macdougal Alley Skimmers. When I just googled them, what did I find? The only reference online seems to be a comment I made ages ago on someone else’s blog: “The ’80s for me are typified by a quintessentially NYC fashion: the MacDougal Alley Skimmer. Capezio flats in about eighty colors; many girls I knew collected them like girls in the ’50s collected cashmere sweaters.” My one lone pair was electric blue.

7. Steel-toed motorcycle boots. In college, I thought they made me look tough and sexy. Who knows, maybe they did, but it’s up for debate. Though I could certainly kick frat boy ass if I needed to…

8. The hiking boots that I wore every day in Israel, when I wasn’t wearing sandals. Those boots took me across deserts and up Masada. I absolutely destroyed them that year.

9. Sarge’s army boots: when we first fell in love, he was a drill sergeant in the Army Reserves. Once a month, he’d leave college to do a drill weekend at the nearby Fort. I loved to watch him polish those boots in preparation; he was a brilliant, meticulous, patient, and dextrous polisher. I knew it was a very good sign.

10. Hedgehog’s first shoes: Irish linen slippers with a pearl button on each. So ridiculously expensive, so difficult to tuck her fat little feet into them properly. So lovely.

I asked you about clothes in my old post, let me ask now about shoes, about the special, meaningful pair in your personal history.

Aviva is expanding its business offering with the introduction of specialist electronic equipment cover.

Firms across various sectors, including telecommunications, media, health, leisure, motor and construction can benefit from new tailored protection.

Computers are excluded from the policy, however, recording, storing and broadcasting equipment, general office equipment, manufacturing control or monitoring equipment, security systems or medical scanning and diagnostic equipment are included.

Cover can be extended to include full breakdown, use away from the premises and hiring out of equipment.

Other optional features include full theft cover without the need for forcible and violent entry; additional equipment up to 25% of the sums insured; cover for anti-theft devices; incompatibility of software or programs; repair investigation costs; temporary repair and virus checking; costs for destroying viruses and cover for electrical waste and electronic equipment disposal.

Aviva’s senior engineering underwriter, Gary Thom, comments: “With continuous advancements in technology, we have introduced a bespoke electronics product to provide specialist markets with robust insurance cover for complex electronic equipment.”

He adds: “Electronic equipment can be covered under ‘Machinery’ or ‘Contents’ sum insured on a standard ‘Fire and Perils’ or ‘All Risks’ policy but, when it comes to technical products a business could lose out in the event of a claim if it failed to have adequate cover that fully met its requirements.”
